Container Train Transportation in India
First Japanese company to engage fully in container train transportation in India
With its vast land area about nine times larger than Japan and complex commercial customs, logistics and sales channels, India’s transport routes, schedule management and fee structures are difficult to grasp. Accordingly, our company has targeted the local container train transportation business, the first Japanese company to do so on a full scale. We have formed partnerships with local companies and rolled out container train transportation for inland northern India.
-
POINT1
We conduct container train transportation in the territories from the three major western Indian ports of Nhava Sheva, Pipavav and Mundra to the northern Indian area around Delhi. We can reduce transportation cost by achieving bulk transportation of 90 TEU* at one time.
- 1 TEU = one 20-foot container
-
POINT2
With the cooperation of local partner companies that control the key points in rail transport, we can visualize our transportation services.
-
POINT3
Logistics processes can also be traced. Compared to truck transportation, this has swept away concerns about delayed deliveries, and damaged or lost cargo, etc. and improved our service quality.

Container train transportation in India
We conduct container train transportation in the territories connected to the three major western Indian ports of Nhava Sheva, Pipavav and Mundra to the northern Indian area around Delhi, where many production bases are located. The long distance from each of these ports to the outskirts of Delhi is on average 1,300 km. For cargo that requires routine and bulk transport, container train transportation has a huge advantage over trailer transportation.

Endeavoring to visualize services
We formed a partnership with ICD*1, operators that hold an important position in logistics in India. We have established a container train transportation company (CTO*2) as a joint venture. By controlling these key points in rail transport, we can visualize our service details. This enables us to better understand actual operational details, starting with scheduling and fee structures. We are endeavoring to clarify India’s complex and opaque distribution rules and fee structures and to prevent problems with delayed deliveries and damaged or lost cargo.
- ICD: Inland Container Depot. A special facility authorized by the Indian government. All maritime container cargo that has used rail transport must pass through the ICD. Here we carry out cargo delivery as well as various other operations such as import/export customs clearance, container storage, and loading/unloading.
- CTO: Container Train Operators who use trains to conduct cargo transportation at each of the ICDs scattered around major ports and inland areas. This is a relatively new business opened to the private sector in 2006, and there are many cases of ICD operators also launching their own CTO business.
